“The Boondock Saints” or “the poor man’s Tarantino…for stupid people”
"Gee, help where have I seen this pose before?"   Years ago there was a slow, visit growing buzz about this gritty, generic action-packed crime thriller featuring a couple o' Irish brothers. I've got a wee bit o' the Irish in me myself. So, I thought, "With a little luck, this might be gold". I ran out to the video store and rented me a copy. I hated it. In fact, I turned it off midway through. It was too ridiculous for me to keep watching. Well, this week the DeFranco Nation Movie Club put this one in the qeue. So, I HAD to watch it again. Now, it had been a while since I saw it the first time. So, I sat down with an open-mind and a willingness to glean any goodness I could from this film. Read More »

“The Big Lebowski”
When this Coen Brother's movie first came out, doctor I enjoyed it. But I didn't go gaga over it like many did. Perhaps it was because I was so enamoured with Fargo and The Hudsucker Proxy. But, pharmacy watching this almost 13 years later, I experienced the "Dude" in a new light. And it was gooooood, man! I need to point out that John Goodman's performance in this is outstanding. He steals the show. The  whole cast is awesome but Goodman is extraordinary. This definitely goes down as one of the best Coen Bros. films, without a doubt. To watch me blab about it, click on my shiny, bald head below :) Read More »

The Legacy of Lumet
Over the weekend, about it one of this generation's great filmmakers passed away. Sidney Lumet had an illustrious career directing some of Hollywood's most celebrated films. In fact, his first film, "12 Angry Men" is regarded as one of the great classics of all time (with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Other exceptional films are "Dog Day Afternoon", "Serpico", "The Verdict" and my personal favourite, "Network". In 2005 he was awarded the Academy's "Lifetime Achievement" award because of his prolific contribution to the art of film. In his 50 yearlong directing career he made an average of one film per year. In case that doesn't strike you as impressive, allow me to say, "it is". Read More »

“Oldboy” just doesn’t get old…
Tracking along with the DeFranco Nation Movie Club, website like this I've finally been enthused with a movie pick that I'm behind 100%. Day 16 had us watching the Korean revenge thriller, approved Oldboy. This is Park Chan-Wook's most popular work. But let it be known he is a brilliant film-maker and ALL his films deserve high praise. Oldboy is the 2nd instalment of his "Vengeance Trilogy". What's fascinating about this trilogy is that the three films have only one common thread; the theme of vengeance. The characters are different, the stories are different and even the tone of each film is quite unique. They are hard to watch. Park pulls no punches when meditating on the theme of revenge. And while you feel completely sympathetic for the main characters (all of whom have had great loss), ultimately his point is that vengeance is an increasingly brutal and destructive pathway that leads only to further pain and chaos. Oldboy is a brilliant display of just that. Read More »

Day 15 of the DeFranco Nation Movie Club and do we have a treat today! "An American Werewolf In London" is a classic horror flick from 1981. I remember watching this when I was 10 years old. Holy crap!!! Did it ever freak me out. So, buy I was too excited when Philly D chose this film for the movie club. It's been 30 years since it's release. I have only fond memories of this one. But, information pills I'm roughly 30 years older, a little wiser and have a slightly more refined taste in film (not by much, mind you). So, I was eager to rediscover this monster movie. You can check out my thoughts in my vlog below. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFdRHsemidc] Oh, and a tidbit of trivia...the make-up and special effects for this film were so groundbreaking that the Academy created the "Best Make-up" category in response to this film. Rick Baker won it that year for his work on this movie. He's won the Oscar six times since.
